Led by your Learning Success Coach, this is a time for learning the skills needed to become an independent student. We’ll cover time management, study skills, goal setting and the social emotional lessons needed to be successful. And along the way we’ll have a little fun, build class community and get warmed up for the week.

English language arts
Flexible schedule

This course provides a strong foundation in grammar and the writing process. It emphasizes simple but useful composition and language mechanics strategies with multiple opportunities for modeling practical, real-world writing situations that will enable students to improve their written communication skills quickly. Through a variety of grade-appropriate reading selections, students develop a clear understanding of key literary genres and their distinguishing characteristics. Your English teacher will provide a schedule of live virtual lessons each week.

We offer math for grades 6, 7, 8 as well as high school Algebra, Geometry and beyond. All of our math courses include live lessons each week and independent online study in our adaptive platform. The work is personalized to match the student’s ability and a rich dashboard of analytics helps students, parents and teachers track progress.

All of our science courses are inquiry- and lab-based, including a significant number of hands-on lab activities. The sixth-grade integrated science course focuses on basic physical science, Earth and space science, and ecosystems. Seventh grade focuses on cells, the life cycle, nutrition, chemical reactions, force fields and energy. And eighth grade covers genes and adaptations, evolution, energy and the Earth, the Earth’s changing climate, waves, and technology and human impacts on the Earth.

Middle school is a great opportunity to learn about the world, its history and governments. This is the time each day when students will focus on US history, world history, civics, geography and more. Sixth-grade students will focus on the cultural, religious, economic and political systems of society. Seventh-grade students will view the world through historical and geographic lenses. Eighth-grade students will use inquiry to learn citizenship and civic engagement while connecting the major events of US History to modern day issues.

Our full-time middle school students will take five courses each semester. In addition to the four core courses, they will choose one of our semester-long electives each semester. Some of the electives you can choose from include: MS Spanish, MS Guitar, MS Game Design, MS Art, MS Photography, MS Coding and more!

What is the role of the parent or guardian at home?

Middle school students typically work more independently, but parents help set routines, review pacing guides and encourage check-ins. Expect to spot-check progress weekly, ensure a quiet workspace and nudge students to attend live lessons and small-group sessions. Your Learning Success Coach will share simple steps that make this easy.

What is a typical weekly schedule for a middle school student?

While the daily start and end times vary, a typical week includes:

  • Live lessons: Weekly real-time instruction with teachers and peers for each class.
  • Small-group & 1:1 time: Targeted instruction, project collaboration and personal check-ins.
  • Independent study: A blend of online coursework and offline activities like labs and research.
  • Homeroom: A dedicated time for Learning Success Coaches to help students build habits like time management and goal setting.
  • Clubs and social time: Opportunities to connect with peers through interest-based extracurricular activities.
When is middle school enrollment? How do I enroll?

Enrollment deadlines for middle school are the same as high school. You can view the latest info here. To get started, just fill out the online enrollment form. Once submitted, we’ll review and send you an email with instructions on how to upload your required documents. After we collect all the state required docs, you’ll be assigned a Learning Success Coach who will help you get started.

How do students interact socially?

Students will have collaborative live lessons as a whole class and in small groups using Zoom. They will also have one-on-one lessons and feedback sessions with their teacher. We also offer middle school clubs where students can socialize both online and at optional in-person events.
