Shakespeare Sonnets and Social Justice:

Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles (SCLA) designed Sonnets for Social Justice: Teaching Shakespeare for Identity, Community, Justice, and Action to provide an arts-based curriculum for secondary school English Language Arts/History/Social Studies classes. This professional development workshop offers teachers experiences with this innovative curriculum, which combines close reading strategies, theater-based exercises, and the Learning for Justice standards developed by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Asynchronous work will include opportunities for investigation into Shakespeare’s craft as a writer and creative writing assignments that allow for student explorations of identity, diversity, justice, and action. By the end of the workshop, participants will have resources and materials for teaching selected Shakespeare sonnets in a versatile unit of study. The curriculum can also be used to introduce Shakespeare plays, add drama-based pedagogy to literature study, and address student interests in social justice topics without losing a close connection to the complex text.

Certificate Hours: PD certificate for 10 hours upon completion of three day boot camp
