For many school students, history is a subject found in textbooks. For Jackson McSweeney, it is a lived learning experience. As a third grader enrolled at ASU Prep Digital, Jackson is not only an avid learner but also a living history actor, bringing pivotal moments of the American story to life for audiences across Arizona.

ASU Prep Digital gives Jackson the flexibility to connect his schoolwork with his interest in living history, allowing him to pursue his passion in meaningful, hands-on ways.

A knack for the past

Jackson’s fascination with history began almost as soon as he could read. As a curious elementary school learner, he quickly developed a passion that went beyond traditional coursework. Seeking a way to channel his enthusiasm for American history, Jackson’s family drew inspiration from the living history museums they had visited.

“We thought about all of the museums we’ve visited that incorporate living history and wondered if we could find something like that for Jackson to participate in,” said his mother, Ashley Pepka.

They soon discovered We Make History, a volunteer group that hosts immersive events in Phoenix and Tucson for school field trips, homeschool groups and homeschool programs. Jackson found a perfect home in the community.

“He fits perfectly,” Ashley said.

Digital school gives him the flexibility to attend these events and spend more time learning about his favorite history topics.”

Learning without limits

Jackson’s passion for living history requires time, travel and deep study. These needs do not always fit into traditional schools or rigid school-year schedules. As a student in an online program, ASU Prep Digital provides a flexible schedule that allows him to balance academics with hands-on experiences.

Through online learning, Jackson can progress at his own pace while still participating in live classes led by certified teachers. This dynamic learning environment supports student success across K-12 grade levels.

Jackson is equally inspired by the academic rigor of the program. His mom notes that the high-quality online curriculum, including engaging online classes and interactive assessments, allows him to focus fully on his schoolwork. She also credits the supportive teachers and staff for helping her son thrive.

History is human

As a living history actor, Jackson demonstrates what life was like for soldiers, civilians and children during America’s most significant eras, including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

At these immersive events, you can find him teaching peers how to write with a quill and ink, performing in the music tent or describing important battles. Ashley explains that these experiences go beyond traditional social studies or language arts lessons. They allow learners to truly understand history by living it.

Jackson enjoys helping others understand that the people we read about in history are not so different from who we are today. By stepping into their shoes, he helps his community see the humanity behind the history.

A modern path to student success

By balancing his passion for the past with a forward-thinking online public school education, Jackson embodies the ASU Prep Digital commitment to helping K–12 students design a personalized path toward lifelong learning.
