How I Prepare For Tests

By Ashlee Dodd

We all know that tests can be quite nerve-wracking, whether it’s an exam for a class or state testing in general. Sometimes, I feel quite overwhelmed by the amount of information displayed on my screen or struggle to piece together complex concepts for my answers. Testing can be a high-pressure time for students due to the expectations we face and the limited time allotted for each subject test.

My personal strategy for preparing for tests is the Pomodoro Technique. I study a specific subject for at least 25 minutes, take notes, and then take a 5-minute break. This method helps me avoid common burnout and enables me to retain information better than simply cramming for hours on end.

In the past, I used to study based on procrastination, waiting until the last minute, which negatively impacted both my grades and motivation. However, I have learned to develop better skills for handling testing by taking teacher feedback into account and using more effective methods to create study guides.

Preparation varies for everyone; you don’t need to follow a specific method that someone else uses. Instead, find an approach that works best for you and is truly beneficial. Your effort and consistency are more important than any single score.
