My Journey as a Ballroom Dancer

By: Emily Stelmach

A year ago I watched Dancing with the Stars and really liked the style ofdance. So I did a little research, and it’s ballroom and I looked at all the differentstyles. Since that day I have wanted to take lessons, but it wasn’t until 3 monthsago did I actually decide to start taking lessons. So I found a studio and booked alesson. It was the best decision I have ever made. After my first lesson Icompletely fell in love with dance. It’s the highlight of my week. I love it so much,It’s my favorite thing to do. I quickly decided that I wanted to do competitions.

Since I’m a beginner I’m in the bronze category which means I dance 3 differentstyles, Cha Cha, Rumba and Swing. I signed up for two single dances and onescholarship round. I spent the last few months training, we came up with routinesand the day finally came. I was super nervous the days leading up. I wasespecially nervous since I was having trouble keeping a smile while I wasconcentrating but the day came. That day I was terrified, I had butterflies in mystomach, but I pushed through. I met my instructor and we started warming up.My time came up quickly and when I got out there, everything changed. It wasjust me and my instructor out there, I became confident and I smiled the wholetime through my first dance. I danced six more times including my scholarshipround. Award time came and I didn’t expect much, but much to my surprise Iactually got First in all my dances. I even won $200 which I didn’t even know wasan option. I was just so happy and proud.

Dance is my passion and I’m so happy I decided to do it.
