Off to Oxford: ASU Prep Digital student Gyselle Ready’s summer plans

« Back  |

What if that summer trip you’ve been dreaming about wasn’t just a vacation—but a step toward changing your future and the world?

This summer, Gyselle Ready, a junior at ASU Prep Digital, is packing her bags for Brown University’s prestigious Experiential Education Program in Oxford, England, where she’ll focus on leadership and critical issues shaping policymaking.

Gyselle has always loved history, but in eighth grade, a book sparked something bigger. The story featured a main character whose mom was president, and it got Gyselle thinking, “I could go into politics. I’m passionate about helping other people. This is something I could do.”

The program will give her a deeper understanding of how she can create meaningful change through public policy.

A passion for policy

Gyselle isn’t new to exploring big ideas. Last summer, she attended the National History Academy in Virginia, where she deepened her appreciation for American democracy and learned about defining moments in U.S. history.

“I remember learning about veto powers and visiting all these historic sites with other students who were also involved in civic engagement,” she says. “Talking to them, I started to think, maybe I want to go into public policy. Maybe I want to be the one making laws to help people instead of just enforcing them.”

“When I saw Brown University had a program in Oxford about public policy, I thought, this is the thing for me. I have to do this,” Gyselle shares, her excitement evident. “I really want to learn about leadership, making tough decisions and drafting policies. And leadership isn’t just being in charge. It’s about being a good listener, hearing other people’s ideas and lifting people up.”

The program, which brings together students from around the world to discuss global challenges, offers a deep look into how policies are designed to solve complex societal issues. Gyselle is also looking forward to immersing herself in England’s rich culture. She shares lightheartedly that overhearing the charming accents and snapping a bucket-list selfie in front of Buckingham Palace are high on her agenda!

Empowered by ASU Prep Digital

Gyselle’s acceptance into such a competitive program came as no surprise to those who know her. Her ASU Prep Digital Learning Success Coach, Terry Henry, is quick to praise her.

She is one of the finest young people I’ve interacted with during my 21 years in education,” Henry notes. “Her maturity, emotional intelligence and academic skills place her performance above that of other students. Gyselle consistently earns top grades, recently scored a composite 30 on the ACT and demonstrates leadership in everything she does.”

Henry also highlights Gyselle’s positive impact on her peers. Whether excelling as a peer tutor or competing in mock trial events, her communication skills and cheerful demeanor inspire those around her.

Gyselle deeply values the support she receives from Henry, saying, “He knows me so well. He knows about my siblings and what I’m doing in the community. It’s nice to know there’s someone in your corner who always has your back.”

That spirit of connection extends to all her educators at ASU Prep Digital. “All of my teachers are so kind and engaging. They reach out, they call me, they ask how I’m doing. I feel like the connections are deeper and I’ve really found a joy in learning,” she shares.

Initially joining ASU Prep Digital as a part-time student during her sophomore year, Gyselle transitioned to full-time enrollment and hasn’t looked back. The school’s flexible approach has empowered her to excel in rigorous college-level courses such as Mandarin, while still carving out time for her personal passions like singing and reading.

The program’s flexibility, one of the many benefits of online school, has also given her more cherished moments with her family, including her younger brother, who is also an ASUPD student. “I honestly don’t think I would have gotten to form this connection with him if I were at a traditional school,” she reflects. “I’m really grateful for that, especially since I’ll be a senior next year and going off to college after that.”

Planning for the future

For Gyselle, the Oxford program is a stepping stone in her greater mission to lead with empathy and inspire change. She views public policy as a powerful tool to create meaningful impact and drive solutions that truly make a difference.

“I’ve shifted my focus to the environment and civil rights. At the end of the day, this is the world we all live in and someone needs to step up to make it fair and ensure opportunities are accessible to everyone.”

She credits her parents as role models, admiring their commitment to family and community. Her mother, an attorney, inspires her with a tireless dedication to helping others, while her father’s warmth and adept people skills motivate her to connect with others in meaningful ways.

Gyselle is clear about her long-term goals, although the exact path is still taking shape.

“I know I want to be somebody for the people,” she shares. “Whether that’s as a lawmaker, a senator or even a Supreme Court justice, I want to be in a position of power where I can make a difference. I don’t want to just sit at home reading the news and feeling sad about the world—I want to be part of the solution.”

“People are definitely going to see me on their ballot,” she adds, a bold declaration of her vision for the future.

Her advice for other students considering ambitious goals is simple yet powerful. “If you’re interested in something, go for it,” she says. “Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it because they don’t know what your future holds. Look for opportunities, ask questions and see where life takes you.”

Unlocking potential with ASU Prep Digital

Gyselle’s story is a powerful reminder that passion, hard work and the right support can lead to extraordinary opportunities. From her leadership ambitions to the exciting path ahead at Oxford, she exemplifies what’s possible with ASU Prep Digital, where students with big dreams are thriving every day.

Empowering Student Voice with AI: Meaghan Goliday Named AI Teacher of the Year

« Back  |

At ASU Prep Digital, innovation in education isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a daily practice. And no one embodies that spirit more than Meaghan Goliday, who was recently named AI Teacher of the Year by MagicSchool. Her thoughtful integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into instruction transforms her students’ learning experiences and secures a place for AI-powered tools in digital education.

A path rooted in relationships

Meaghan Goliday’s journey to becoming AI Teacher of the Year didn’t begin with algorithms or platforms—it started in a traditional classroom in Louisiana. There, she discovered her north star as an educator: relationships come first.

That guiding principle has carried her across the country, from helping launch a high school in Seattle to teaching sixth-grade English at ASU Prep Digital. Today, she’s known not only for her warmth and connection with students, but for her transformative use of technology—particularly AI.

Teaching smarter, not harder—with AI tools

At ASU Prep Digital, Goliday quickly became a leading voice in AI-powered instruction. She’s among the network’s top users of MagicSchool AI, using it to streamline lesson plans, generate rubrics, scaffold feedback and build goal-tracking systems. With these generative AI tools, she’s found smart ways to lighten her planning load—without sacrificing student impact.

Her favorite hack? Designing custom reading passages for live lessons that align with grade-level metrics and student learning goals that they will later be assessed by, giving them a clear, consistent roadmap for success.

But AI isn’t just a behind-the-scenes tool for Meaghan—it’s something her students actively learn to use, too.

Students who think differently

In Goliday’s classroom, AI is a springboard—not a shortcut. She teaches students to use it for brainstorming, revising and organizing ideas, especially when they hit a creative block. They’re discovering how language models like ChatGPT can enhance their critical thinking and streamline their learning paths. The result: students who feel more independent, more capable and more engaged in their own interactive learning experience.

“How many times have I heard a student say, ‘I’ve written everything I can think of and I still need two more paragraphs’?” Goliday shares. “AI helps them practice their agency and cultivate their creativity and critical thinking without having to wait to meet with me during office hours.”

Rather than replacing human effort, AI extends it—giving learners the tools to think more critically, not just absorb information.

Where relationships and technology meet

For all the innovation in her classroom, Goliday is clear about one thing: tech doesn’t replace the teacher.

Students trust her because they feel seen, understood and supported. That trust allows her to leverage AI in ways that enhance—not hinder—human connection. By automating certain tasks, she creates an adaptive learning environment and more space for the moments that matter: the lightbulb realizations, the honest conversations, the real-world breakthroughs that can’t be scripted.

A model for ethical, empowered use

With AI at their fingertips, students face new choices. Goliday meets those moments with mentorship, not punishment. She sets clear expectations, revisits them often and helps students understand how their choices affect their growth. When missteps happen, they become learning opportunities.

“It’s hard not to go down the rabbit-hole of being the AI police when we see something suspicious. But I take a different approach,” she says. “I take these opportunities to talk to the student about what led them to make that choice and how it impacts their learning. We then talk about how to tweak what they did to help them in their planning and editing phases and what other tools are available to help them when they get stuck.”

Her values-driven approach teaches students to use AI tools thoughtfully, take ownership of their learning and become more reflective learners.

A look ahead

Goliday believes generative AI will soon be a standard part of every educator’s toolkit. Her advice for teachers just getting started? Start small. Focus on one tool or interactive workflow that genuinely helps. If it doesn’t make your teaching easier or your students’ experience better, try something else.

“I found MagicSchool AI super easy to use, especially since they have their own certifications and examples within their tools,” Goliday says. “The number of tools they host might feel overwhelming, but start out with one that will make a big impact for you, like the Writing Feedback tool or the chatbots, and then go from there!”

A well-earned honor

Being named AI Teacher of the Year isn’t just a career milestone for Goliday—it’s a celebration of what’s possible when relationships and innovation go hand in hand.

“Personally and professionally, this is a recognition of the work that I do faithfully every day,” she says. “It is recognition of how I use MagicSchool AI for not just the regular grading support, but how I have created motivating challenges for my students that keep them excited about coming to class.”

Her biggest inspiration is her mom, a longtime special education teacher who did what was best for her students, never letting a lack of resources limit her students’ potential.

“She inspired me to always think big,” Goliday says.

And that’s exactly what she does—for herself, her students and the future of education.

Using AI as a springboard for student success

Can artificial intelligence (AI) do more than just provide answers? Bryce Wolcott, a secondary teacher with ASU Prep Digital and Khan World School @ ASU Prep, believes it can.

Wolcott’s innovative approach highlights how AI can move beyond quick fixes to ignite deeper learning and exploration. Using Flexi, a free AI tutor for math and science, he empowers students to take charge of their learning.

Many students struggle with not knowing where to begin when tackling complex problems, whether in biology or chemistry. Wolcott shows how an AI prompt can lower this barrier, giving students a clear starting point and a much-needed confidence boost. “The best assignments are ones where AI isn’t giving students the final answer,” he explains, “but helping them explore, refine and build toward something.”

Check out a recent interview where Wolcott shares how he leverages AI to enhance classroom learning while empowering student ownership.

Advanced math opportunities start in middle school at ASU Prep Digital

« Back  |

At ASU Prep Digital, we are committed to redefining education by creating innovative opportunities that empower students to thrive academically and succeed in every aspect of life.

That’s why our Middle School Programs include Accelerated Math Pathways, a unique route for students ready to take their math skills to the next level. This program accelerates math learning and lays a strong foundation for earning college math credits while in high school.

Here’s everything you need to know about this individualized, performance-driven learning experience and how it opens doors to advanced student learning opportunities!

What is Middle School Accelerated Math Pathways?

The ASU Prep Digital Middle School Accelerated Math Pathways program is designed to fast-track high-achieving learners through their middle school curriculum. By accelerating their learning pace, students can take high school-level math courses, such as Algebra 1, as early as 7th grade

With this approach, we keep the middle school math curriculum intact, but students progress through it more quickly through summer courses or a condensed timeline within the academic semester. This ensures that each student receives the same foundational knowledge without creating gaps in their problem-solving or critical thinking skills.

Who is eligible?

Entry into Accelerated Math Pathways is by invitation only, ensuring every student is truly ready for the challenge. Eligibility is based on a comprehensive review of each student’s academic performance, including the following factors:

  • Math grades over the past two or more years
  • Benchmark scores from programs like Dreambox
  • State test scores (AASA) over two years
  • A final discussion with the Learning Success Coach, teacher and family

This selective process ensures that students with a strong mastery of math concepts can thrive in this environment. It’s important to note that once a student starts on the accelerated pathway, they can adjust if needed. Likewise, students who initially decline the program can revisit the option in the future.

Student learning online

Why consider this program?

Here at ASU Prep Digital, we know math is foundational to so many future careers and academic aspirations. For students who shine in math, Accelerated Math Pathways offers life-changing opportunities:

  • Advanced coursework
By mastering Algebra 1 and Geometry by 8th grade, students enter high school ahead of the standard math progression, giving them the flexibility to tackle higher-level courses sooner. This head start opens the door to advanced opportunities like concurrent online courses for college math, allowing students to earn credits in subjects such as College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus or even specialized areas like Engineering Mathematics or Mathematics for Business.
  • Tailored flexibility
Our program offers multiple acceleration options. Students can fast-track a semester-long math course in as little as 4 weeks during the summer or distribute it over 8-9 weeks during the school year while managing their regular course load. Families can choose the path that works best for their student. This flexible approach makes it easier for middle school students to balance rigorous academics with other interests.
  • College & career prep
This accelerated track is a significant advantage for students aspiring to STEM fields, equipping them with the skills and achievements needed for success in college and beyond. By earning valuable college credits during high school, students not only prepare for the rigors of post-secondary education but also make a direct investment in their future career goals.
  • Individualized learning approach
Every student in Accelerated Math Pathways has a personalized learning plan developed with guidance from our Learning Success Coaches. We focus on mastery, ensuring students have the foundational skills they need to succeed without skipping grade-level content. If a student encounters challenges along the way, we’re here to provide the support they need.

Things to consider

Before committing to the program, families should reflect on several aspects to ensure it’s the right fit for their student’s learning style and schedule. Factors to think about include:

  • Does your student thrive on strict timelines and enjoy solving challenging math problems?
  • Will summer courses fit into your family’s plans, or would a semester-based approach work better?
  • Is your student motivated by deadlines, or would an accelerated pace cause undue stress?

A pathway to success

The ASU Prep Digital Middle School Accelerated Math Pathways program isn’t about speeding through math classes; it’s about empowering students to go beyond traditional boundaries, seize advanced learning opportunities and build a solid academic foundation for long-term success.

Whether your student dreams of excelling in STEM fields or simply wants the challenge of advanced coursework, this online program paves the way for a bright future.

Explore free online school options for students with autism

« Back  |

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This means that a high number of students require a more personalized learning environment in order to get the most out of their education.

One solution lies in online education, which can provide tailored learning experiences with flexible pacing, individualized lessons and varied teaching methods. This adaptability can help students with disabilities in grades K-12 engage with content in ways that resonate with them, ultimately promoting a deeper understanding and retention of subject matter.

Understanding autism in education

ASD significantly impacts students’ learning abilities, and many students with autism face challenges in traditional classroom settings, leading to difficulties in engaging with peers and educators. Strategies such as individualized education plans (IEPs) and sensory-friendly environments can enhance learning experiences and foster social skills, emotional regulation and academic success — all while respecting the student’s comfort and individual learning style.

Benefits of online learning for students with autism

Online learning offers a unique opportunity for students with autism to engage in education at their own pace and in a comfortable environment, with benefits including:

  • Personalized Learning Pace: Online learning and homeschooling offer significant benefits for students with autism. They have a flexible and personalized educational environment that encourages them to learn at their own pace, reducing anxiety often associated with traditional classrooms. Online platforms can incorporate varied teaching methods, catering to varied learning styles and sensory needs.
  • Reduced Sensory Overload: Unlike traditional classrooms which can be overwhelming due to noise, bright lights and crowded spaces, online learning provides a controlled environment with fewer sensory distractions. It allows students to choose their learning environments and fosters a more conducive atmosphere for learning. By creating sensory-friendly spaces, online education enables students with autism to engage with the material more effectively and comfortably.
  • Enhanced Communication: Many students with autism face challenges in traditional social interactions – however, technology-based interventions can improve social skills and reduce anxiety in children and adults with autism. Multimedia resources like videos, interactive games, discussion forums and chat features provide opportunities for students to express themselves in low-pressure environments while practicing communication skills in context. The ability to engage with peers and educators through technology helps build confidence and allows them to communicate at their own pace when they want.
  • Focus on Strengths and Interests: The best part about online or distance learning is the ability to personalize each lesson to the specific student. This includes incorporating their interests into the curriculum to help increase engagement and motivation. Curriculums can also be tailored as needed based on their strengths and weaknesses to help them build skills and retain information in real-time.

Free online school options

There are a variety of tuition-free online school options ideal for students who may not have access to traditional schooling or who thrive in non-traditional environments. Here are some to consider:

  • Public online charter schools: Charter schools combine academic rigor with emotional and social support to create a stable environment that fosters growth. Faculty at some institutions are experts in special education and possess specialized training specific to autism. In these schools, each student receives a customized learning plan after enrolling based on their individual requirements and objectives.
  • District-provided online learning: Online public schools often offer all of the tools necessary for distance learning, like computers, headphones and textbooks. They cater existing curriculums to students with specific needs and should all be 508 compliant, meaning they are made accessible to students who have challenges with communication. Reach out to your school district to learn more about what they offer.
  • Non-profit educational platforms: Non-profit programs are often free or low-cost and provide access to specialized curricula, interactive tools and supportive communities. The Autism Inspired Academy is a great example – it’s a K-12 school that is built specifically for students with autism with a focus on character and skill development.
  • Open educational resources (OER): These are learning, teaching and research documents that are all public domain, meaning they are free to use, adapt and redistribute as needed. You and your student can find high-quality resources about learning styles, tips and tricks, skill building and more at your fingertips.
