For Josephine Javing, a senior at ASU Prep Digital, life is all about finding her edge, both on the ice and in the classroom. As a competitive figure skater and member of the top 10% of the ASU Prep Class of 2026, Josephine has mastered the art of balancing her demanding schedule with her academic success.
Her journey to ASU Prep Digital began when her passion for skating started taking her across the country. “I started traveling more with figure skating, and I missed a lot of school. It just wasn’t working out having to go to school every single day,” Josephine explains. The flexible schedule and asynchronous learning offered by ASU Prep Digital allowed her to stay on track academically while pursuing her athletic goals.
The flexibility of online learning allowed her to maintain her academic goals while chasing her dreams on the ice.
Josephine’s skating story is as unique as her academic journey. “I started skating when I was three years old. I didn’t really compete until I was about 13. We took a trip to Arizona, and I met a coach that I really ended up liking. She introduced me to solo dance, which is what I currently compete in,” she shares.
Now, Josephine travels from her home in Montana to Arizona once a month to train with her coach, while also practicing with the Montana State Figure Skating Club—usually twice a day—during her time at home. The flexibility of her online high school allows her to adjust her training schedule while keeping up with her schoolwork.
Her hard work recently paid off at the 2025 Solo National Dance Final in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she competed in both the Junior Combined (ranked 17th) and Pattern Dance events (13th). “I moved up a level and did my best yet!” she says proudly, adding that her goal is to break into the top 10 next year.
Josephine’s ability to balance her solid spins and core courses is nothing short of impressive. She demonstrates that, with the right support, young athletes can thrive in both their extracurricular passions and their academics.
Josephine’s mom, Kelli, admits she was initially hesitant about the transition to online school. “We were nervous how she would manage her time and handle everything, but she’s done an amazing job balancing it all,” Kelli says.
Kelli credits ASU Prep Digital for providing a high-quality and accredited learning environment that meets Josephine’s unique needs as a student athlete. “I am really impressed with the program and how it has prepared her. I can see how her time at ASU Prep is going to transition into college. I have no doubt in my mind that she’ll manage her time and be able to do school independently as a college student, because she’s doing it now.”
Kelli also highlights Josephine’s persistence and work ethic, traits she believes were honed through skating. “She learned early on to put in the work to get results,” Kelli says.
Josephine’s Learning Success Coach, Terry Henry, describes her as “one of the most remarkable individuals within our school community.” Henry adds, “Her academic accomplishments, National Honor Society membership and abilities reveal a level of focus and dedication that surpasses many. Josephine is not only intelligent and conscientious but also remarkably dependable, making her exceptionally well-prepared for success.”
Online education at ASU Prep Digital has been a game-changer for Josephine, allowing her to revisit assignments, work at her own pace and manage her competition schedule. The self-paced nature of her online classes ensures she can meet her academic standards while pursuing her athletic goals.
As Josephine looks ahead to college, she’s considering studying sports nutrition, a natural fit for a student athlete who understands the importance of discipline and balance. Whether she’s perfecting her twizzles on the ice or acing her advanced placement coursework, Josephine is proof that with hard work and the right learning platform, you can skate circles around any challenge.
