Club Spotlight: Sparks Book Club

By Audrey VanVenRoy

I am spotlighting the Sparks Book Club which is a club that I was in when I was a sophomore. Now, admittedly, it wasn’t for me, but I still quite enjoyed the club. It includes a good amount of activities and I did have a lot of fun during the meetings! That is why I want this club to be highlighted, so people who enjoy reading and books in their large variety could be encouraged to join this club and make friends through their hobby. I think that what makes the club unique is that it requires you to read a variety of books over a few months, along with participating in assembling slides together in a slideshow about the book. It is very entertaining and it allows people to bond together about their favorite books.

The club’s overall mission/purpose is to read books together in an environment with other book-lovers, causing them to make friends with each other. It fosters friendliness and kindness amongst a group of people who share common interests, and it allows them to find even more common interests amongst reading books. Books have a wide variety of genres, so combining a group full of a variety of book-lovers allows us to explore the variety of similarities and differences book-lovers enjoy. What students will typically do during meetings, which I already mentioned earlier, is that a book is typically introduced every month (or every other week, it depends on the length of the book, I believe), and the members have to read a specific amount of chapters before the next meeting. Of course, you won’t get in trouble for not completing them, since it’s a club and everyone gets busy sometimes, but I would recommend that you try to keep up in order to fully get the best experience in the club! In regards to other info in relation to the club, I don’t believe that there are any events going on at this very moment, but I’ve noticed that they have hosted book drives so people could head out and donate their books, so definitely keep an eye out for that!

Overall, this club is an amazing one, and I really do think that it is so important to ASUPD, as it allows us to just read together, opening our minds up to the world beyond, whether fictional or not. I would definitely encourage students to get involved and perhaps even join this club if you get the chance! However, of course, if this isn’t your vibe, then please take a look at all the clubs us students are writing about, and even the ones that haven’t been written about! I promise you, your life will be impacted for the better because of it!
