Poetry is more than just words on a page arranged in a certain way; it is a form of self-expressionthat has the power to connect individuals across time and space. Poetry is a way to conveyemotions, thoughts, and ideas in a way that is beautiful and even impactful. However, many areoften intimidated by its ambiguity and open space for interpretation. One of the most importantreasons why we believe that people should read and write poetry is because it allows us to seethe world through a different perspective. Poetry not only helps us understand ourselves, but alsoinspires us to make positive changes in the world around us. Our mutual love for poetry has beena great inspiration to us, as we have both been deeply moved by the works of various poets.One poem that has had a significant impact on both of us is “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. Thispowerful work speaks to the strength and resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of toughchallenges. Angelou uses a number of poetic elements to convey her message, includingrepetition (repeating a word or phrase), metaphor (one thing that alludes to another), and imagery(use of vivid images). For example, the repetition of the phrase “I’ll rise” throughout the poememphasizes the speaker’s determination in the face of adversity, drilling in Angelou’s message ofinner-strength and bravery.

Poets often use their work to examine universal experiences such as love, loss, and mortality. Inthis way, poems help us to connect with one another on a deep level. Additionally, poetry can beused as a tool for demanding change. Notable poets like Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, andClaude McKay are all living proof of poetry’s profound ability to amplify the voices of themarginalized. Throughout history, poets have successfully used their work to push for socialjustice and challenge the status quo, fighting for civil rights and increasing cultural awareness.
