“Harper the Wizard’s Origin Story”

By Amiya Austin

Once upon a time in the year 1464 a beautiful baby girl was born to the world by Queen Adeline and King Leonard. They both lived in their kingdom called the Celestial Kingdom. Both the king and queen had brown hair but the king had tan skin and brown eyes while the queen had fair skin and gold eyes. When their baby was born she had the same gold eyes as her mother.

“She is beautiful my dear, what shall we name her?” King Leonard asked.

“Well I have always dreamed of having a bard as a child so how about Harper?” Queen Adeline suggested.

“You have always chosen the best names my love,” King Leonard said as he kissed his wife’s forehead.

“Thank you darling,” Queen Adeline responded.

But Harper did not want to become a bard. It did not really peak her interest. She was not fully sure what she wanted to be until she was six and stumbled upon the local wizard practicing some spells. As he was casting a spell called magic missile just for practice, she stumbled into the room.

“Why hello your majesty, I am just practicing some of my spells,” the wizard said, putting his wand down. “Would you like to watch?”

She nodded and sat down in one of the chairs nearby. She looked in awe as he casted a watery sphere.

“Wow! How did you do that?” she asked, very amazed.

“I am a wizard your highness. I have practiced for years to be able to perform these spells,” the wizard explained. “Those were the more simple spells I have.”

“Can I try?” she asked very eagerly
“Your highness it takes a lot of practice to master these spells, but if you would like you can work on first level spells,” the wizard said smiling.

“Really?!” she exclaimed.

“Sure I do not see why not, but I think it would be safer for you to read a spellbook than to just practice spells all of a sudden,” the wizard said, chuckling a bit.

“Ok! Thank you Mr. Wizard!” she exclaimed.

“Oh please your highness, call me Arthur,” the wizard said.

“Ok Arthur!” she exclaimed.

“Harper, it is time for supper!” Queen Adeline shouted.

“I have to go to supper see you soon Arthur,” Harper said as she ran to the supper room. Arthur just chuckled and continued practicing his spells.

As the family sat down and enjoyed their supper, Harper decided to tell her parents that she wanted to be a wizard.

“Mother and Father, I have something to tell you. I would like to be a wizard,” Harper said finishing her supper. Her parents looked at her for a bit, their expressions unreadable before looking at each other briefly and back at Harper.

“Sweetie, are you sure a wizard is something that you would want to be?” her mother asked “Why not a bard?”

“I’m not interested in being a bard mother. I want to learn spells,” Harper explained.

“You can always learn spells as a bard,” her mother argued.

“Yeah but I am not interested in that. I would like to do different spells besides entertaining the common folk. I would like them to see me as a hero, their protector, I want to be able to protect people who need protection like the folk heroes in our town do,” Harper said. “Please mother, I am begging you.”

The queen just sat there not knowing what to say so she turned to her husband for answers. He just gave her a look that said ‘just let her be a wizard’. Once she got her answer she sighed and turned to her daughter.

“Are you sure you want to be a wizard?” she asked, making sure this is what her daughter wanted.

“Yes mother more than anything,” Harper said, looking her straight in the eyes.

“Very well, but if you are going to be a wizard you must train for it,” her mother said, very seriously “Are you sure this is still something you want?”

“I will do whatever I have to if it means becoming a wizard,” Harper said.

“Ok, you will go to the training room tomorrow but for now go to your room. I am going to get you a spellbook,” her mother said.

“Thank you so much mother, you will not regret this!” Harper exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear as she dashed off to her room.

“Gosh that child is so persistent,” Queen Adeline says while smiling.
“She is indeed, she is just like you my love,” King Leonard says as he looks at her lovingly.

“Hush up darling,” she says smiling and nudges his arm a bit. “Anyway, I must get her a spellbook before she stays up until dawn waiting for me to get one.”

Queen Adeline quickly gets a spellbook and returns to her daughter’s room and gives her a spellbook to call her own. She explains everything there is to know about becoming a wizard as Harper sits on her luxurious bed taking in every detail and soaking it up like a sponge. The next day Harper goes to the training room to start her training.

“Now sweetie, here is how things are going to go. You are going to train in this training room so you can survive different things. Then after a few hours of rest you will go see our wizard Arthur so you can learn different spells whether it is information about the spells or how to cast spells. But I must warn you this training will be pretty painful and very exhausting which is why I am giving you a few hours of rest to fully compose yourself. But that may change over the course of your training. It may go from a few hours to a few minutes depending on how you fare and how quickly you go through the training,” her mother explained. “Are you sure you still want to do this because if not right now would be an excellent time to speak up and say otherwise?”

“I am positive mother,” Harper said, very determined to do the training.
“Very well, this is your trainer Amelia,” her mother said motioning over to a woman.

The woman in question was a twenty-four year old woman with short blonde hair reaching only to her shoulders but it was in a ponytail. She had captivating purple eyes and pale skin. She was a human who was 5’4 and sporting some training gear.

“Greetings your majesty. I will be your trainer for however long you need me. I will train you so you can face any challenges on your way of becoming a wizard,” she said happily while bowing.

“I will leave you both to it, consider your training to have started now,” Queen Adeline said walking out. “Also please try not to hurt my daughter too badly. I love her too much.”

“You do not have to worry about a thing your majesty,” Amelia responded.

Harper trained with Amelia for multiple hours of the day and after that she would go to Arthur and learn something about casting spells. She did this from ages six to twenty. She became immune to lightning, being petrified, being pierced, being poisoned, and eventually being frightened. With all the training like being struck by lightning, being pierced, and being poisoned she learned not to be afraid much. It was actually suggested at age 17 that she was good and did not need the training anymore. But being persistent she said no and that an extra three years would be enough to fully make sure she was good enough to be a wizard. Since she was very determined, she kept training for those extra three years which is how she became immune to being frightened. Harper would also learn cantrips and get her first level spells with Arthur. She even decided to learn common sign language and orc in her free time.

She decided to fully go out on adventures once she was twenty-five. By then she had long brown hair that reached to her back that she would often put up in a ponytail. Her gold eyes became more captivating as she got older and she was now 5’6. She packed up some things like gold, her spellbook, some potions and wands, some clothes, two daggers, some playing cards, and some more weapons.

“Just promise me you will be safe darling,” Queen Adeline said.

“Yes mother I promise. You did not put me through all of that training for nothing,” Harper said smirking.

“Gosh, my beautiful daughter has grown up so much,” King Leonard said, hugging his daughter.

“I am going to miss you both so much,” Harper said, hugging her father back with her mother joining the hug. “I will write to you as much as I can, I promise.”

“We know you will,” both parents said at the same time.

Harper then waved them goodbye with a smile and waved at the townsfolk saying stuff like “I promise I will protect you all” and “No harm will come to you with me around” as her parents watched with a smile.

“She grew up so fast and she looks so much like you,” King Leonard said, smiling.
“She did my love,” Queen Adeline responded while smiling only looking at her daughter.
“She is still so much like you after all of those years.”
“She is, I just hope that she will be ok.”
“I am pretty sure she will be fine my love.”
“Yes you are probably right I am just glad we actually let her be a wizard, she looks very happy.” “She sure does let us hope that she will end up being ok.”

Harper ended up being just fine. She went on different adventures with two druids, two paladins, another wizard besides herself, a bard, an artificer, a sorcerer, a ranger, a rogue, a cleric, and a barbarian. Even though she went on these many adventures, Harper still kept her parents updated on these adventures she was going on. She ended up becoming a level four wizard which she of course told her parents. They could not have been more proud of their daughter. Harper would continue going on these different adventures with her party. What kind of different chaotic adventures would they get into next? Well, only time would tell.

Author’s Note:

I chose to share this piece because this was the first ever origin story I wrote. It is also because this was based on my second D&D character and I really like D&D. I am most proud of how the overall story turned out. I did not really try to convey many emotions besides interest. Also the theme I was going with was to follow your dreams no matter what.
