“Then It Ate My Soul”

By Caitlin Cruz

I’ve always hated the real world. I was just different from everyone else. The world was not full of color, it was dull and lifeless. The world was not full of wonderful smells; it all smelled like old spit. The world was not soft and happy ;it was rough and hard. My dad is cold and hard not showing his love for me. My mom seemed to be far from me, even when she was right next to me. I felt like all of my life has gone to this room, filling it with colors, smells, and happiness. But when I looked outside it returned to me the sadness that lived outside my control. I sat and looked but nothing seemed to see me. That was until the color opened up.

I was staring into the mirror in the late afternoon while my dad sat down stairs watching TV unaware of anything in the world. Then as I sat and stared a colorful circle appeared; it had bright blues and greens. It wasn’t forcing me to look but I couldn’t stop exploring the colors that lived inside it. As I watched the colors mix and bend into each other as it grew. The colors jumped to fill the wide bathroom mirror.

The sad brown my bathroom walls were changed to a bright pink that made me want to dance. The depressing white toilet changed to a light purple that I had never seen. I looked down to my skin and it had turned clear with just the color of my soul showing it was a deep blue, a blue that seemed to capture me as a human. How I long for my mothers apparel and acceptness, how I wished I had been born to a different man. By the time I pulled my eyes from the blue the bathroom was filled with colors. I felt a smile spread on my face as I bolted for the rainbow doorknob. I opened the door quickly with a happiness I had never experienced before.

The world in front of me was no longer sad and devoid of color. It was now bringing with joy and colors that seemed to mix and fight for my eyes. I skipped down the stairs that once were hard but now soft like cotton candy. My dad still sat on the couch but now instead of flesh and blood he was clear like me. But his soul was a black like coal that had been all used up. I felt sad for him, that he had no burn left. That sadness left quickly with the thought of seeing my mom. I gilded over the sparkle green floor to the bright yellow door. Opening it was amazing, the outdoors smelled like cakes and chocolate.

The sky was a perfect blue that seemed to dance in the sky hand in hand. The green grass looked like soft stuffing. I had no need for shoes in this perfectly colored world. I jumped down the sideway that looked like children had dragged different colored chalk down it. I stopped in front of my mom’s house, it was no longer just brown it was purple and yellow looking like the milky way. I bounced to the front door and the smile on my face grew. I loved being around my mom even in the old world. I just always felt so different from her. The door opened and there she was right behind the door waiting for me arms open for a hug. I quickly jumped into the hug. Our colors blended together making a beautiful indigo. When the hug broke I saw her color. It was a gorgeous cherry name. That most children used to color their hearts on little pieces of paper.

Compared to the house I was at it was so lively the colors jumped and changed every thirty seconds it seemed. I felt a happiness spread in me. I looked down at my soul and it was no longer a deep blue that seemed sad, it was a light blue that reminded me of the sky full of opportunity. I looked out the back door of the house and saw a bright yellow light that seemed to be fixed in one place. My voice seemed to echo as I asked “Mom do you know where that light is?” My mom looked at me but didn’t reply, only dancing again along with the colors. I was puzzled by this. Can she not speak? I tried again “Hey mom” I said louder with more firmness in my voice the colors stopped dancing only for a moment only to begin dancing once more.

I stopped trying to speak to her and decided to see where the color led instead. I opened the backdoor and climbed on top of the fence that was a pink purple. From there I was able to jump to the roof of the house in front, the feeling was very strange like jumping from cloud to cloud. As I jumped by I saw small dogs and cats playing. Their soul colors were bright oranges and yellow pure and bright, with no need for stress in their peaceful lives. I saw families happily sharing moments together that glowed with neon pinks and neon greens. They waved as I went by. The closer I got to the beam the more color in the town.

Any color with even a touch of darkness seemed to disappear. The colors began hurting my eyes with figures becoming hard to see through the colors. Then I was at the beam. It was hundreds and hundreds of feet tall. But it wasn’t a beam at all. I realized it was a building. I slowly jumped from the last house and walked over to it. The building was rough and sandpaper-like, strange to the soft and fluffy feeling the rest of the town seemed to share. Also, the yellow color didn’t dance, it was flat like it had been painted on. I slowly walked around the building feeling the rough texture under my hand. Then I saw a small door on the side of it. I quickly went over to see where the door led. I touched the knob and a cold jolt went up my arm.

I had not realized the world had been this perfectly warm place without a cold thing in the world other than this door knob it seemed. I twisted it expecting colors to jump out at me but it didn’t. The place was dark and eerily quiet. But curiosity pounded through my chest needing to know more: what is this rough, quiet, and cold place doing in this town? I slowly walked into the hollow building that seemed to go on forever. The floor of the place even felt like sand paper. My body seemed to grow tired as I walked out the stairs. As I climbed high I began to hear a sound. It sounded like a vacuum machine.

Then when I was about 10 floors up I saw a glowing light that looked like the sun. I quickly went up the steps but stopped dead in my tracks when I made it to the floor with it. It wasn’t just a glowing light there were other humans there. But instead of walking around being happy there was a straw like object in their stomach that led to where their souls’ was. Once I snapped out of the shock I quickly moved to the closest person trying to loosen the hold the tube had on it. I grabbed and pulled but the tube didn’t move even an inch. By each moment that passed it seemed the peoples’ souls only grew darker. In a moment of desperation I bit the tube. It felt slimy and rubbery like biting into a used piece of bubble gum. Then I felt a rush of something in my mouth that tasted like iron. I hastily removed my mouth from the tube to see a flood of blood pouring out of the tube.

I screamed with fear as the blood only poured out more. Then the place went quiet once more with the hum of the vacuum tubes stopping. I looked around for a reason and stopped to see the “sun” open from the middle. It was pure darkness inside that seemed to eat away at the color. Before I could make out anything other than the color a swift black tentacle shot out of the middle of the darkness piercing into my stomach. I screamed as hot pain shot up my body. Tears poured out of my eyes with fear and pain. Then the hum of the vacuum started up again. I kicked and clawed as the vacuum slowly ate my soul. I could feel the colors draining from me. Maybe before I would just allow it, but something in me had changed. I wanted more from life.

I wanted to see more of the colors, smell more of the smells, and feel all the textures the world had to offer me. I wanted to see my mom again, I wanted another chance to not spend so much time in only one colorful place that I controlled. I wanted to see more of the uncontrollable now I wanted more. I wanted to be more greedy with life. But in only moments I could feel myself fading from this colorful world. I was scared I wanted to stay. Finally, the darkness fell over me. Then I opened my eyes. The bathroom counter was wet with tears. I was no longer clear, my tan skin was back. No longer could I see through myself but instead I could see my brown eyes that matched my brown eyes. The bathroom was as I remembered it was different sad browns but instead of letting that get to me I saw possibility. I saw hope for the first time in a long time. I went to my bedroom that was colorful but not the only colorful place on earth anymore. I grabbed my phone and texted my mom.

“Hey mind if I come over?”

Then in seconds my mom responded.

“Of course honey <3”

I put my shoes on and walked right past the burnt out man who sat on the couch and opened the door to what used to be a sad world to me but now was filled with hope and possibilities.

Author’s note: I made this story to play on humans and what emotions we give colors. Then also on a fantasy part that I don’t see used a lot hope all enjoy. Cat out
