How I Prepare For Tests

By Amiya Austin

Testing is something that makes me feel nervous but also excited. Sure, it is not fun going over the same material you learned while also wondering how well you will do. I like how it challenges me and also some of the material I go over for a test is mainly interesting for me or I just like the subject. This is also because there are different ways that I prepare for tests that have proven to be helpful.

One method that is useful for preparing for tests is doing practice problems. For example, if it is related to Spanish I review some of the questions asked, go in my notes, and answer that way. It really helps me prepare for whenever I have to actually do the test.

Another method that I find useful is going back to previous lessons to review them. For example, if I am doing a Khan Academy test I simply rewatch the videos and redo some of the mini lessons that go along with it to review the information that will likely be on the test. If it is math related I also take notes on how to solve the problem in case it comes up.

The last method that I find useful is essentially taking a lot of notes on the topic of the test. For example, if I have to take a test on Economics I go back to previous lessons and write a lot of things down. Whether the notes are a lot of definitions or a written formula of how to solve certain math equations, I make sure to write them all down in my notebook and go over them multiple times to memorize the information.

My test prep habits have not really changed that much. At most when I take notes I do not write the entire article in as my notes and I make it a lot shorter. I have learned that I should not stick to only one method of studying and change it based on my preferences.

I know that state testing is pretty soon and that can cause some nervousness. But remember that everyone prepares differently and there is no correct way to prepare for a test. What is important is the effort that you put into studying for the test.
