Teacher Appreciation: Señora Valera

By Amiya Austin

My favorite ASUPD class so far is Spanish 3 which is taught by Señora Valera. What makes this class stand out to me the most is the subject itself because I really enjoy Spanish. I also like how the class is run as a whole. I chose to spotlight this class and teacher because the course is really fun and if you like Spanish, you will love this class.

The class I will be covering is Spanish 3. In this class you do Duolingo, cultural projects, speaking videos, speaking assessments, and reading. In the class you gain more knowledge in speaking and understanding Spanish. I recommend this class to other students because it can really help with getting more proficient in Spanish as a whole and it is a really fun class.

Q1- What do you love most about teaching this course?
A- What I love most about teaching Spanish 3 is my students! I love working with motivated students who truly want to learn to speak Spanish. Unlike Spanish 1 and 2, Spanish 3 is not a required course so anyone in this class really hopes to improve their Spanish fluency. I love to see the growth in my students’ speaking abilities and confidence.

Q2- What’s one project or topic students usually enjoy most?
A- I think students enjoy the cultural projects the most because it lets them explore art, music or cooking.

Q3- What’s one piece of advice you give to students starting it?
A- My advice would be to come to class with a willingness to try, not to be perfect. Also, please review notes, it will help make sense of all of these crazy grammar rules.

This class and the teacher impacted me because it made me want to be more fluent in Spanish. Even though I had always wanted to know how to speak Spanish, this class has made the want for Spanish increase a lot. Señora Valera has helped me improve my Spanish dramatically which has helped me grow both academically and personally. She also connects with us by asking us what we did during the week or last week in Spanish while also telling us what she did during the week or last week in Spanish which has also improved my Spanish speaking abilities.

I would definitely recommend trying this class with Señora Valera especially if you like doing Spanish or if you want to improve your Spanish. Not only will you learn more Spanish and improve your Spanish speaking skills, you will also have a fun time doing it. Even if you are nervous about taking a new class or applying a new skill, getting to know the teacher can help you to be confident and make the class more fun.
