What This School Year Taught Me

By Paloma Swick

When the school year started for me, I had mainly college courses to focus on, which was different from my other years at high school where my high school classes outweighed my college classes. It felt kind of strange, and while my classes were more difficult, it felt like I had it too easy since I didn’t really have that many classes. I had difficulties completing all of my schoolwork, but in the end, I ended up finishing it all with decent grades. I found some of the information that I learned in my new classes interesting. I was kind of worried at the beginning about certain assignments, but I ended up completing them.

As the school year went on, I think that I improved my confidence in certain areas of life. I still have a long way to go, but there are certain things that I am a little more confident about, such as volunteering. I had some difficulties getting volunteering experience, but I ended up making it in the end, although I had help with it. One thing that I am proud of is that I have earned a lot of credits for college, which I think will help me in the future.

When I graduate high school, I am going to go to college and study Graphic Design. In order to prepare for college, I am going to schedule meetings with academic advisors to help me. I am not going to continue high school next year because I am graduating and moving on to college. Now, my goals are a lot more specific rather than vague as they were before. For example, I did not know what I was majoring in, but I recently found out. I am also going to have a lot more responsibilities, and I am going to take on some internships and/or part-time jobs.

The advice that I give to those who are moving forward is to not put things off. I know that a lot of people already say this, but it is good advice since procrastinating can cause you to feel a lot of regret and have to deal with a lot of stress later. If you made it this far, then thank you for reading this piece and following the Student Blog this year!
