The Benefits of Taking Summer Classes

« Back  |

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to start making plans. While it might be tempting to sleep until noon every day and spend countless hours binge watching the latest Netflix craze, there are ways to be productive—and you don’t even have to leave the couch! Taking summer classes may not sound fun at first, but here are a few benefits that are sure to change your mind:

Boost your GPA

For those who are looking for a way to get ahead of the competition, taking summer classes can be an excellent way to accelerate your academic career and bump your GPA up! Your GPA is calculated based on the quantity and value of your grades, which means that doing well in summer courses has the potential to increase your GPA and help you stand out on college applications.

Explore your passions

During the regular school year, your main focus is taking core classes, such as English, math, and science. Luckily, taking summer classes will give you the opportunity to explore fun electives that you’re passionate about! Courses like digital photography, game design, or guitar have the power to set you on track for a future career pathway while helping you earn some extra credits.

Graduate high school sooner

If you’re longing to begin your college career, enrolling in summer classes can help you get there faster. Using your summer to knock out additional courses not only gets you one step closer to high school graduation, but also shows prospective colleges you have drive and a great work ethic.

Earn College Credits

Not only can taking summer classes help you graduate sooner, it can also help you save time and money in college! Set yourself up for success by enrolling in concurrent courses, which allow you to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. And at ASU Prep Digital, you can take ASU courses with real ASU professors, giving you a taste of the college experience before stepping on campus.

Credit Recovery

If you struggled in a class during the regular school year, summer is a great time to recover those credits so you can graduate on time. Many schools allow students to retake courses, but some may not offer the subject you need. ASU Prep Digital works with schools to enroll students in the classes they need to stay on the path to graduation.

How to End the Semester Strong

« Back  |

As you begin counting down the days to the end of another semester, now’s the crucial time when some ‘A’s are made and others undone. Focus on your assignments, work hard and the last day will be upon you soon enough. In the meantime, here are 3 helpful tips on how to end the semester strong.

Stay on track

So far, you’ve been studious, passed your tests and have the grades to prove it. Don’t slack now just because the end of the semester is near. Stay focused on your studies; there are still enough tests and assignments left to skew your grades if you perform poorly. To ensure you stay on top of your classes, keep a close eye on your calendar of due dates, continue studying with your peers and make the time to give every assignment your full attention. Finish strong!

Refresh your study techniques

With summer just around the corner, it can be tough to stay focused while you study for your last few tests. Consider changing up your techniques in order to reinvigorate your studying and end the semester strong. Join a study group, study in a new location or create a game to help you memorize material. If you haven’t already, determine what type of learning style you prefer—visual, auditory, kinesthetic or reading/writing—and try a new technique that targets that specific style. Switching your routine can make learning more engaging and effective. For more ideas, check out Three Study Tips for Online Students.

Thank those that helped you along the way

When the last assignment is turned in, the final test is finished and your semester is officially over, don’t forget to recognize those that helped you get through all the late nights, tough assignments and difficult lessons. It could be your mom or dad, your teacher, a study buddy or even just a friend that cheered you up during stressful moments. Whoever was there to offer a hand, there’s no better way to guarantee their support next semester than to thank them.

You’ve worked hard all semester and the finish line is in sight. Remember to stay on track with your hard work, refresh your study habits and thank your faithful support system. You’re on your way to end the semester strong and set yourself up for an even stronger one next time.

Student Spotlight – Mahayla Palachuk

« Back  |

Many students turn to online learning in search of a new dynamic after spending years in a brick-and-mortar environment. But for ASU Prep Digital freshman Mahayla Palachuk, online learning is all she’s ever known.

“I’ve been doing online learning since kindergarten,” Palahchuk said. “I was with the same school up until the beginning of my freshman year, but after they made a lot of changes and took away the flexibility from the program, my mom and I went searching for a new online school.”

Luckily, Palachuk didn’t have to search for long before discovering the answer to her problem — ASU Prep Digital.

“My oldest friend actually attends ASU Prep Digital,” Palachuk said. “After her dad told my dad about all of the benefits, I reached out to her and she had nothing but good things to say.”

The glowing review from her friend coupled with an informative phone call with Kathleen Bacon, one of the admissions advisors, solidified Malachuk’s decision to join the community of learners at ASU Prep Digital.

“The two main deciding factors for choosing ASU Prep Digital were the flexibility and the college courses,” Palachuk said. “Flexibility is a very big thing for me and my family, and the ability to take college courses will allow me to hopefully be able to do the required courses I would have taken while in college.”

Being able to work at her own pace and plan for her future has made it even easier for Palachuk to pursue her passions while earning her high school diploma.

“I have the time to work on and write my books,” Palachuk said. “I have my first novel, The Rise of The Crimson Archer, in editing, and I have another book series that I’m currently developing.”

And because being part of a community is important to her, Palachuk also finds time to get involved with clubs at ASU Prep Digital.

“I am a blogger for the ASU Prep Digital Student Blog and the ASU Prep Digital Book Club vice president,” Palachuk said. “I have many different projects I am working on and researching and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

While Palachuk has a passion for writing, her other interests include vlogging, reading, and weather!

“When I was six years old, I watched Twister for the first time with my mom,” Palachuk said. “Over the years, my love and interest for weather, severe storms, and natural disasters has grown. It eventually led to me deciding at 13 that I wanted to go to college and major in meteorology!”

Palachuk even plans on starting college classes next year to get ahead and save herself time when she gets to college.

“I may try to knock out required courses like math so when I do go to college, I can focus more on my major classes,” Palachuk said.

Palachuk is a force to be reckoned with and wise beyond her years. As an advocate for online learning, she offers advice to those who are considering making the switch.

“If you are someone who needs the flexibility in their schedule or wants to be able to work at their own pace, online learning would be perfect for you,” Palachuk said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but in the end it’s extremely rewarding.”

And for those who want to join ASU Prep Digital, Palachuk is certain you’ll be pleased with how many benefits there are to being a Sun Devil.

“Everything is completely opposite of how my old school was before I decided to leave,” Palachuk said. “The schooling is flexible, the teachers are present and helpful, and it’s so much easier to catch up if you fall behind. I know I made the right choice to enroll at ASU Prep Digital!”
